This week saw the arrival of Merchant Navy Day and Ashford Borough Council marked the occasion with a ceremony held outside of the Civic Centre. In attendance were the council's Leader Cllr Gerry Clarkson, along with the Mayor of Ashford Cllr Mrs Jenny Webb and other distinguished guests.

Merchant Navy Day is an event to honour the brave men and women who kept our 'island nation' afloat during both World Wars, and is intended to raise public awareness on the UK's ongoing dependence on seafarers who are responsible for the majority of the UK's imports.

The ceremony included readings and prayers from Reverend John Mackenzie, while those attending also participated in singing hymns and were observant when the traditional raising of the Red Ensign took place. Standard bearers were present throughout the ceremony to lower and then raise flags as a mark of respect, which was then followed by a minute of silence.
