Ashford Borough Council has launched the Voluntary Emergency Response Appeal (VERA) to help local communities hit by the ongoing COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak.
In recent weeks the council has been inundated with requests from residents who want to try and help in some way, however big or small. Because of the need to stay at home, many are unable to help physically so they have asked whether there is a way they can help financially instead by giving to those in need within the community.
VERA will do exactly this. Launched over the weekend, people have been quick to respond, with £1,410 donated by more than a dozen supporters so far and the total going up every day.
Chief executive Tracey Kerly said: “Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we have seen so many within the community come together to help those care and protect our most vulnerable residents. The compassion and selflessness shown by so many to those who need it most has been overwhelming.
“This fund aims to support local people even further during this time of crisis.
“Perhaps you want to volunteer but are unable to leave the house due to self-isolation? Maybe you’ve received a food parcel and want to give a little back? You may have even experienced the effects of COVID-19 first-hand and want to help others through a similar situation?
“Every penny raised will be spent locally, on the residents of our borough, to help them through this critical time,” said Tracey.
