World Homeless Day
People around the globe will be marking World Homeless Day on 10 October and Ashford Borough Council is organising a series of events starting on this day and leading up to The Big World Sleepout on 7 December.
The council has teamed up with Ashford Together and Engie to stage events designed to raise awareness of homelessness and to encourage people who need help to come forward. There will also be fundraising for homelessness charities with the borough.
The programme kicks off on 10 October with an event at The Beacon in Bank Street from 11am and 3pm which will highlight the support provided to homeless people in Ashford. On 14 October Rudolph Requests involves the donation of an extra Christmas present for those children who are in temporary accommodation.
A community day is being organised at the Ashford Christian Fellowship in Bank Street on 26 October, and people can also meet ASHford the homeless bear and join in with different craft activities at The Beacon on 7 November from 10am to 3pm.
A fundraising quiz night is planned for 30 November to be hosted at Ashford Christian Fellowship by Porchlight, with the programme culminating in a concert to be held on Sunday 8 December at St Mary’s Church, featuring the Ashford Borough Council staff choir and a local band. Food will be served by Ashford Together.
Details of other events are being finalised, including a haircut for the homeless to be staged at The Razor Room at 35 Bank Street on Sunday 13 October, and additional fundraising activities planned for council staff at the Civic Centre in Ashford.
Sharon Williams, head of housing at Ashford Borough Council, said: “I congratulate everyone who has given up their time to organise these events. It’s by working together in partnership that we can make a real difference when it comes to raising awareness of homelessness and providing help to those who most need it.”
With winter approaching, the public and companies are being urged to make donations to Ashford’s Winter Night Shelter. Items required include toiletries, boots, sleeping bags, towels and pillows. Any donations can be taken to The Beacon. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with any of these events can contact Kareen McDonald on 07427 440438 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
